2024 Wheelchair Lacrosse Rule Changes

“Puck Drop” Faceoffs

Decision:

  • Implement a “puck drop” hockey style faceoff.

Rationale:

  • Create a 50/50 play that is more consistent and easier to administer.

Details:

  • Each faceoff player will lineup at the center dot in their own defensive half.

  • All parts of the players’ body, stick, and wheelchair must start behind the center line.

  • The stick may be placed on the ground or in the air but must start behind the center line.

  • Once the faceoff players have assumed their positions, the official will say “set.” Once this signal is given, both players shall remain motionless until the official drops the ball into play.

  • The official will push the ball straight down towards the center dot to begin play.

  • The ball must hit the ground before it is played by a faceoff player.

  • Attack and Defense players must remain behind their respective restraining lines until possession is called by the official.

  • With the transition to 7v7 play (see below), all regulation even-strength faceoffs will be conducted with 2 players at the Midfield position. The wing player may choose to lineup on either side of the court.

  • Overtime even-strength faceoffs will be conducted with 3 players at the Midfield position.

7v7
ABLE-BODIED (AB) PLAYERS

Decision:

  • Reduce team size to 7v7 during regulation play AND reduce the maximum number of able-bodied (AB) players allowed on the court to 2 per team.

Rationale:

  • Reduce the total number of players needed to start a new team, while also reducing the impact of AB players and progressing toward a true parasport format.

Details:

  • Positions will be 2 Attack, 2 Midfield, 2 Defense, and 1 Goalkeeper.

  • 2 players still need to remain in the offensive half, and 3 players still need to remain in the defensive half.

  • Regulation even-strength faceoffs will be conducted with 2 players at the Midfield position. The wing player may choose to lineup on either side of the court.

  • Overtime play will remain the same — 4v4 (including goalkeepers) with no AB players allowed on the court (with the exception of goalkeepers).

  • Overtime even-strength faceoffs will be conducted with 3 players at the Midfield position.
